How do you ensure sustainability in MICE programmes?

Sustainability in a MICE programme is contracted behaviour, not a tree on a slide. We show the line items incentive houses can brief to a CSR committee: park and conservancy fees in the Mara and similar models; gorilla permit science in Rwanda and Uganda; tightly limited private-island guest numbers in Seychelles; reef and lagoon practice in Mauritius; highland community partnerships around Simien and Lalibela; community lodges where that is the honest product. We avoid orphanage tourism and orphaned-wildlife theatre, including ‘cultural villages’ staged for a gala.

Carbon is honest. Long-haul aviation is the bulk of the footprint whether the finale is Zanzibar, Mahé or Mauritius. We can discuss high-quality contribution, light-aircraft load factors, and overland where it does not ruin the guest. We will not pretend a safari, a granite island or a highland circuit is carbon-neutral. Plastic-bag-free Rwanda and real lodge conservation reports beat a planted-tree certificate from an airport kiosk.

Corporate event managers should put sustainability in the RFP as questions: which fees are in the quote, which community visits pay, which activities we will refuse.
