Ethiopian highlands and water — Lake Tana and Blue Nile chapter

Ethiopia · 1–2 nights from Bahir Dar

Lake Tana monasteries and Blue Nile Falls

Boat to island monasteries, then Blue Nile Falls when the water is actually falling — a gentler historic-north chapter than Simien walking, or a middle night between Addis and Lalibela.

How we run it

This is liturgy-adjacent: modest dress, no flash in the wrong places, no church-as-theatre. Gondar’s castles sequence naturally. We skip the falls when the river is a trickle and say so in the proposal, not on the viewpoint.

Altitude is kinder than Simien but Addis still comes first for long-haul groups.

What is included

  • Bahir Dar night, boat, monastery brief
  • Tis Abay only when levels justify the road time
  • Optional Gondar castle morning if the night count allows

What we will not do

  • Falls are seasonal. We will not sell a postcard cascade in the dry.
  • Churches are not a 100-person auditorium. We split groups.

Planner questions

Who is Lake Tana monasteries and Blue Nile Falls for?

12–40; modest dress, shoes off in churches; Tis Abay when water levels justify it

When should we run Lake Tana monasteries and Blue Nile Falls?

Falls are a water-level product. Monasteries run year-round with a dress brief. Lead time: 10–14 months on the historic north circuit with Gondar or Lalibela. Duration on the ground: 1–2 nights from Bahir Dar.

How do we add Lake Tana monasteries and Blue Nile Falls to a Ethiopia MICE programme?

Boat to island monasteries, then Blue Nile Falls when the water is actually falling — a gentler historic-north chapter than Simien walking, or a middle night between Addis and Lalibela. Send company, group size and dates to sales@serengetiexperience.com or use https://www.serengetiexperience.com/rfp — we confirm permits, vehicles and the operations annex on the proposal.
