What's the best time of year for MICE events in East Africa?
There is no single best month. Migration theatre is typically July–October; gorilla dry months are kinder underfoot; Ethiopia highlands prefer October–January; Mauritius is professionally strongest May–November; Nairobi and Addis hold meetings year-round. Fix the diary, then pick the ecology.
What we tell planners
The best time of year depends on the product, not on a generic ‘East Africa season’ slide. For incentive travel: Mara–Serengeti river theatre is typically July–October (crossings never guaranteed); southern Serengeti calving is a different, often more photographic product in February–March; gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda runs year-round, with June–September and a December–February window kinder underfoot and more in demand; Ethiopia’s Lalibela and Simien incentive window is October–January; Zanzibar’s long rains (April–May) are a reason to stay inland or switch to Mauritius or Seychelles; Seychelles sweet spots are often April–May and October–November; Mauritius is at its professional best May–November for golf and outdoor galas.
For meetings and conferences: Nairobi, Kigali, Kampala and Addis run year-round, watching hotel tightness around AU and diplomatic diaries in Addis. Mauritius resorts take larger plenaries; December–April is hot, festive and cyclone season — we write a weather clause. City boards can often move faster than peak safari.
Corporate event managers should not force Migration, gorillas, highlands and an ocean gala into one month. Publish a one-page calendar in the RFP. If the CEO’s diary is April, we design green-season safari, an island- or Ethiopia-led programme, or a Nairobi meeting — we do not promise a crossing.
What to brief next
- — Match month to product: Migration, gorillas, highlands and ocean are four calendars.
- — City meetings: year-round. Mauritius galas: May–November is the professional default.
- — April diaries do not get a guaranteed Mara River crossing.
