How to structure qualification criteria and tiers for an East Africa incentive program
Use stack-rank when the budget must not move, threshold when you want a motivational open end, or a hybrid with a floor and a cap. Then cap headcount to bush-lodge beds (150 double / 75 single), gorilla families and island rooms — not to a wish.
What we tell planners
Three models. Stack-rank: a fixed percentage or headcount (often the top 8–12% of eligible sellers for a President’s Club). Budget-safe; can feel political if the ranking metric is gamed. Threshold: hit a published quota or stretch number and you go. Motivational; your finance team owns an uncapped risk if a boom year sends 80 people to a 24-bed camp. Hybrid: a performance floor plus a cap, or two products — Club (safari/gorilla, tight cap) and Circle (Mauritius or Nairobi, scales). Most East Africa programmes that survive procurement are hybrid.
Write what counts before Q1: revenue versus margin, new business versus retention, product mix, team versus individual, and whether a sales engineer is eligible. Publish the guest policy. Cap home-office and vendor seats. If the CEO must travel, that seat is in the cap, not in addition to it. Do not add ‘plus the regional directors’ after gorilla permits are issued.
Match tiers to geography. Tier one (8–24): intimate tented camps, Rwanda or Bwindi gorillas, Seychelles private island, Simien walking. Tier two (up to 150 double occupancy / 75 single at one Kenya or Tanzania bush lodge): Four Seasons Serengeti, Meliá Serengeti, Serengeti Explorer by Elewana and peers with about 77 rooms — meeting rooms 80–120, so a working session above that splits. Tier three (300+ rooms): Nairobi, Arusha, Mauritius, Zanzibar and other city and beach hotels. A 24-person gorilla morning is three families. An 80-person ‘everyone in one crater picnic’ is still a no.
Communicate the destination as a reward object, not a menu. ‘Top 20 go to Volcanoes National Park; next 60 to Mauritius’ is clearer than ‘East Africa, TBC.’ If air origin is multi-country, qualification letters must include visa nationality work and a no-gala-on-landing-night rule so the field does not design their own routing.
What to brief next
- — Stack-rank protects budget; threshold motivates; hybrid is what most East Africa programmes need.
- — Cap non-sales seats and publish the metric before the contest year.
- — Tier the destination to headcount: gorillas and intimate camps at the top; one bush lodge up to 150 sharing; city and beach (300+ rooms) when you scale.
